I bought a Manchester United soccer jersey for my son last winter. But I didn't buy it at the official Manchester United Shop (I tried to do that just before Christmas, but for some reason, the order never went through).


So I struck out at Christmas, but I didn't give up the quest. After looking around on the Internet for quite some time, I finally rolled the dice and bid on a red short-sleeve home jersey (with v.Nistelrooy #10 emblazoned on the back). I've seen similar soccer jerseys online at a cost of $90 (at the Man U Shop and other places). So when I saw that they were going for a third of that (or less!) on eBay, I figured that I'd take a chance.

I purchased the shirt from an eBayer from Argentina.

I was a little worried about the deal, but the transaction went well and the seller was responsive to my email ... I sent him the thirty bucks and then I sat back and waited for the package to arrive. And arrive it did, roughly two weeks after the seller sent me an email saying that our red (home) Ruud Van Nistlerooy Manchester United soccer jersey had shipped. Upon inspection, I noticed that the return address was not from Argentina.

Instead, the envelope was postmarked from Thailand.

The ManU jersey looked pretty good. But on inspection, I began to suspect that it was not an authentic Nike shirt. While it came with full color Nike tags--and to the average person it would appear to be an authentic piece of Manchester United apparel--I grew to be quite skeptical.



There are, without a doubt, many knockoff soccer jerseys floating around. If you want an authentic soccer replica jersey, you'd do best to buy it from a reputable merchant. If it comes from the World Soccer Shop, for example, (through Amazon.com), it should be an authentic replica jersey. If you buy it from a faceless eBayer in the far east at a low price, it's likely to be a knockoff. Do I recommend buying Manchester United merchandise on eBay? Well ... it all depends. You need to be sure that you are buying from a reputable seller, no doubt about that.

Following that experience, I bought two more jerseys (a manchester United away jersey and a Real Madrid jersey (sporting Beckham's name and number), but not from the same seller as the first. This time, I went with a seller that's right here in the states, not halfway across the world.
